Highly acclaimed by both local communities and around the world, Huafan has a strong commitment to applying knowledge in campus environment, research, teaching, and in services to society.
1. Education of Enlightenment and Virtue Education as Priority
The Ven. Hiu Wan, founder of Huafan, advocated "Education of Enlightenment" as our ideal. She also proposed “Integration of Humanities and Technology with Equal Emphasis on Mutual Enrichment of Compassion and Wisdom” as our educational guidelines. These involve self-awakening, self-development and rational thinking based on Chinese ethics and Buddhist compassion. Our objectives are to cultivate the students' academic competency as well as to foster deeper understandings of virtue behaviors, thereby gradually alternate the integrity of their personality. In order to help students achieve these objectives so as to ultimately enjoy a progressive life-changing experience with individual visions, Huafan has been dedicated to implement an array of consulting seminars, curricular improvisations, and societal activities.
2. Excellence in Teaching and Outstanding Faculty:
Huafan is proud to have received “Teaching Excellence” awards from the Ministry of Education. Since 2006, for four consecutive academic years, Huafan is awarded a total of NT$190,485,000. Among the 71 universities (not including Two-year and Four-year Institutes of Technology) in Taiwan, Huafan is one of the nineteen universities to be honored by MOE as an excellent model of higher education. As Huafan regards students as the core component of a university, our small-size classroom has brought great impact to the practice of excellence in teaching. Together with varieties kinds of research activities and a series of consultation workshops, Huafan has become a representative school for teaching excellence. Under the auspicious of MOE’s Teaching Excellence Project, Huafan established a “Teaching Innovation and Development Center” in 2006, devoting to develop and design a wide variety of innovative teaching activities to further enrich our academic quality and to build a more positive attitude in learning.
3. Emphasis on Student Consultation and Experienced Mentor System
The Ven. Hiu Wan had high expectations for University faculty to play not only the role of professional researchers but also of experienced mentors who work as student consultants. Prior to educational excellence in order to ensuring teaching quality, Huafan is keenly aware of the importance of providing instructional services and consultation for students. In order to enrich students’ learning and life, Huafan has adopted mentor system and peer study groups as two educational strategies. For making classroom an encouraging learning environment, students will autonomously seek help from each other. On the one hand, those who are excellent in certain subjects can lead their peers for further discussions and experiments. As a result, students learn to develop higher and healthier EQ while incorporating knowledge of their specialties to consolidate strong interpersonal relationships among peers. In 2007, Huafan established the “Student Career and Life Development Center” and “Student Learning Resource Center,” which are structured originally from the earlier student affair consultation system. Together with our full-time faculty mentor system, Huafan endeavors to provide advices and assistance to support students in academic learning, personality cultivation, and career planning.
4. Establishment of Featured Research Forums and Promotion of Academic Activities:
Within a Mid-term academic affair planning, Huafan aims to blend academe with activism by developing excellence in teaching and consulting. However, as the Delphi of knowledge and the center of the academia, researches contribute greatly to the academic benchmark positions in higher education. Aside from all kinds of awards and fellowships to support faculty’s researches, academic conferences and seminars as well as grants are provided to support international presentations and publications. Huafan endeavors to concentrate resources to promote featured research forums. Five research centers have been launched in August 2006 to fully represent the research dynamics of the university: the Advanced Manufacturing Research Center, Cultural Heritage Research Center, Sustainable Development Research Center of Slope Land, Calligraphy Research Center, Center for Ven. Hiu Wan Studies. A fruitful cooperation and integration of research resources among departments demonstrates that the featured researches at Huafan present distinguished strengths; these effectively show contributions in academic publications, research project funding, or artistic exhibitions and performances.
According to the 2010 report of Taiwanese ESI dissertation statistics, Engineering at Huafan is ranked one of the top universities, whose worldwide dissertation publications have been quoted as 1 percent of the universities among others. In order to encourage students working on innovative researches, each department and graduate institute at Huafan has its independent seminal research project or thematically designed seminars. Prompted by a performance-based improvement plan, Huafan hopes that students will fully participate in the research fields of their directing professors. The establishment of student innovation prize aims to train students’ dexterity while also enhancing their professional knowledge.
5. Expansion in Academic Exchange and International Collaboration
Internationalization of university education is an important trend in our modern global society. Following our enlightenment ideal and educational guidelines, Huafan has been actively opening all kinds of international collaboration plans. Granted, our faculty and students cultivate transnational views while students further improve their language skills. We have established strong ties with seventeen distinguished sister colleges and universities from the US, UK, France, Japan, Australia, Korea and China. These academic collaborative agreements draw special emphasis on double degrees, exchange students program, exchange faculty seminars, summer school programs, short-term internationalized courses, and academic research forums. These are revolutionary developments for bettering future cooperation and correspondences of sister colleges. For the time being, Huafan invites international scholars to open internationalized courses. Mostly lectured in English, these courses provide opportunities for students to practice foreign languages and for academic scholarly exchange. Annual prizes and scholarships are provided to support students for attending exchange programs and for pursuing double degrees in our sister universities. By the reinforcement of these international collaborative agreements, Huafan hopes that our students will have access to the strengths of higher education worldwide.
6. E-Administration and Digital Campus
To welcome the arrival of E-era, Huafan has a thoroughly digitalized campus. Among many infrastructural developments, Huafan campus installed Wi-Fi networks, E-classrooms, multimedia classrooms. As our newly-built library opened in 2009 fall semester, the original library and information center has been combined into the office of library and information, which focuses on promoting campus digitalization. Our E-administration system is tailored to the special characteristics of Huafan. This Mid-term plan allows the compartmentalized administrative offices of provost, general student affairs, treasure, human resources, and financial administration to join together in order to collaborate with the management of our annual budget. The E-administration system will be the executive structure of the university administrative affairs as well as a major index for our budget planning and for the implementation and management of future projects.
7. Environmental Protection and Eternal Management of Evergreen Campus
Located in Shihding and surrounded by the beautiful natural resources of Ta Lun Mountains, Huafan is renowned for being the university in the woods. The students of Huafan are blessed with serenity and reside in a learning environment. Being far away from the hustle and bustle of city life, students can immerse themselves in a quiet and peaceful forest-like environment, whereas professors can devote themselves to research and education. Although natural landscape is considered one of the inviting features at Huafan, it is also of paramount importance to pay attention to the sustainability of our slope land. For such a unique issue, Huafan has implemented an ambitious eternal environmental protection pledge. This is to ensure full security of slope land as well as a long-term investment on environmental education.
The Sustainable Development Research Center of Slope Land, the Environmental Protection and Professional Security and Public Health Team at the office of General Affairs, and the Department of Environmental Hazards-Resistant Design are three units in charge of observing Issues such as climate change, wind and rain precipitation, water reservation, and landslide to ensure campus security and to prevent natural disaster. In addition, this fenceless campus embraces the forest and the valley as natural guards. Following by the four seasonal changes, members of Huafan community learn much from our Mother Nature.
The university has set up six scenic areas and thirty idyllic sites, mixing education with natural delights. These are designed to inspire students’ understanding of life as a whole thereby nurturing a heart of gratitude as well as cherishment. Moreover, Huafan’s environmental working site is equipped with food waste disposer, water purifier, wastewater treatment facilities. Environmental Protection at Huafan is facilitated through daily life learning. With appropriate treatment of daily disposals, we hope to show that Huafan shares the blessing prosperity with nature and to demonstrate our resolution for protecting environmental resources and for promoting ecological equilibrium.
8. Engineering and Design Education has won Accreditation Approval from IEET
In 2007, 2008, and 2009, six departments had respective won the accreditation approval from the Institute of Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET). Four departments from our College of Engineering and Management as well as two departments from our College of Arts and Design, including Architecture and Environmental and Hazards-Resistant Design were awarded. These accreditation approvals demonstrate that they have been highly regarded by our higher education system. Not only can they waive the evaluation procedure by MOE, the honorable accreditation approvals also represent international acknowledgment.

A Board Range of Financial Aids, Scholarships, and Fellowships
1. Asoka Lion Dream-Fulfillment Program: Full Scholarship for Four Years
Initiated in 2009, Huafan plans to administer three consecutive years of “Asoka Lion Dream-Fulfillment Program.” This program provides full scholarship supporting students whose enrollment to college will be financially-challenged. There will be no obligation or student loan payment after graduation. The scholarship is awarded to eligible students to study at Huafan for four years. 2. Forty Percent of Huafan Students are Awarded Scholarships and Part-time Jobs on Campus
The University has set up more than 20 scholarships and grants to award students in various eligible fields, such as virtue behavior, academic work, physical education, community service, literary work, artistic creation, Buddhist study, and social work. In addition to the financially-challenged family grant, emergency funds are also available for those who experience unexpected financial difficulties and family crises. In addition, there are a broad range of study grants, affirmative financial aids, and emergency support grants. Special on-campus job options and opportunities are available for Huafan students. As a result, two-fifths of the students, that is, almost 40 percent of Huafan students are recipients of scholarships and grants. Also, there are approximately 80 different grants and fellowships from other sources. Therefore, all students should pursue financial aid options directly through the school in which they plan to be enrolled. The administrative offices also provide students with part-time jobs on campus, which intends to foster their spirit for independence and to broaden their fields of studies.
3. Honored Freshmen Enrollment Award
To encourage prospective students consider applying to Huafan, we offer “Undergraduate Freshmen Enrollment Award.” Each department is provided with one scholarship of NT$ 160,000. This award is available for those who are admitted into Huafan as one of their top five priority schools and that the enrollment continues with excellent academic performance, ranking at top 2 of the enrolled department. Students, who are admitted to Huafan by applications, the award will be granted to those two best chosen students and whose total grades add up to level 50 according to the Subject Aptitude Test Scale regulated by the University Entrance Exam Center. Awarded at the first four semester in Huafan, this scholarship is offered to students whose academic performance is ranked as the top 20 percent of the affiliated class and whose moral education is graded above 80.
A Multicultural Campus Life with Diverse Student Activities
1. Dormitories and Facilities
There are separate dormitories for male and female students, providing housing for nearly 1000 students. Freshmen (except those who reside in Shihding, Shenkeng, and Wenshan District) are all eligible to apply for dormitories. Huafan dorms are well-equipped with commercial dryer, refrigerator, food processor and kitchenware, public computer station, commercial xerox machine, and sports equipment. In the student recreation lounge, there are television and daily newspapers. Each room is fully furnished with a telephone, Internet connection, air-conditioner and heater along with other living facilities. First aid, ambulance, and emergency alarm and evacuation system are in operation.
2. Student Societies and Associations
The student body has more than 50 associations in the field of academics, literary writing, dance, music, social clubs, and volunteer services. Each association holds regular activities under the direction of an instructor. According to the seasonal holidays, these associations host cultural creative activities and festivals on Valentine’s Day and Thanksgiving as well as Huafan Balloon Festival and Pinwheel Festival. The Student Government provides plenty of opportunities for autonomy by organizing administrative offices and student congress. These are especially meant for cultivating leadership and for conjuring their selfhood by practicing decision-making in a democratic society.
3. Campus Dinning Services
Eating at Huafan is like having three culinary channels imaginable. Students can eat at any one of the three different locations on campus while enjoying a palate-pleasing variety of culinary offerings. Our first restaurant provides breakfast, self-helped buffet, noodles, snacks, fast food and cold beverages. The vegetarian restaurant offers nutritionally adequate organic dinning bar and taste-bud tingling vegetarian buffet. Students can find all kinds of daily necessities in the Family Mart, bookstore, cafe, and hair salon. Like nearly every other aspects of college life, Huafan campus devotes its resources trying to make sure there is adequate capacity to serve the needs of our faculty and students.
Although located on top of Ta Lun Mountains, Huafan campus can still be visited easily. It takes 50 minutes by school bus to Taipei station. Driving to Huafan from Taipei 101 takes around 25 minutes. Several chartered bus routes are provided for Huafan commuters to I-Lan, and the grand Taipei area where MRT transit services provide convenient local transportation. Bus 666 from MRT Jingmei or Muja station runs every 30 to 60 minutes to Huafan.
